About the Artist
Cheryl Radford has lived and worked in London for 30 years. A strong left brain and right brain thinker, Radford taps into both her creative and analytical skills to capture her subjects, from streetscapes and architecture to figure drawing and golf art.....
It has been said, “success is the quality of the journey”. I believe the best part of ones life is the working or creative part. I am not saying I do not strive to succeed, but I find the real fulfilment and emotional excitement is in the doing. To me one of the real joys is the simple act of drawing.
I enjoy drawing from life, whether it is classical figure drawing or plein air. Drawing from life challenges me to concentrate completely on the information in front of me. Sight, sound, temperature and atmosphere all contribute to my impression of the figure or landscape. My creations may or may not accurately represent a specific person or place. I find works "from life" have a freedom or excitement about them that can not be captured in a studio or working from a photograph. Drawing is the cornerstone of all visual art and there is nothing wrong with "being known as an artist who draws". I consider drawing to be a primary medium, not a preliminary sketch for a painting, sculpture or another medium.
I have to admit there is great satisfaction in seeing my work on the walls of a gallery or selling a piece of my art to someone who truly sees something special in it, but these are not my ultimate goals. Life is a work in progress and creating art is just a part of my life. I draw inspiration from all that life has to offer; a variety of people, two part time jobs, the seemingly ordinary natural surroundings right here in London, to going away golfing at pristine golf courses or an upcoming trip to southern France. In the words of George Bernard Shaw “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.
