New Years Goal - No. 4

1/8/2024

I have my artwork at various shops and have been entering juried shows, as well as some seasonal shows and sales. So. this year... is the year to have a show of my own. It will not be a solo show, but rather a show with my artwork and possibly a local photographer. Still working out the details about where, when, and with whom. My tentative title is "Within Walking Distance". Most work I create is because I walk a lot. I have many years of walking to work in downtown London and Old East Village, plus walking dogs. The focus is on what I know and what I see on a daily basis. It will include lots of architecture, and it will also include other subjects, that all have a connection to downtown London.
Planning for later in the year: late summer or early fall. Giving me lots of time to create new works. I already have a couple of pieces completed. As soon as I have more details, I will share the details.

New Years Goals - No. 3

Because I have been doing admin work and bookkeeping for my day job since 2003, my artwork has gotten smaller and smaller. Most of my artwork has been about 5 inches by 7 inches, with an occasional 6 inches by 24 inches, which is really just one big long 5-inch piece of art... a whole city block of buildings. Now is the time to start working larger!
  • I have requests for larger pieces.
  • Many years ago, I worked larger
  • Just start with a larger piece of paper
To end last year, I did a few larger pieces. Baseball Glove with Ball (8.5 x 12.5 inches), Hurry Hard (8.5 x 12.5 inches), Dundas Streetscape with Figure (12 x12 inches), Figure and Ferns (12 x12 inches), and Golf is Deceptively Simple (8x12 inches). so just continue in that direction. This does not mean that I can't work small, because I will. I have some set commissions and custom work with pricing established for small pieces. And small is easier to ship.

I have enjoyed urban sketching for quite a few years now. This year with a little more time on my hands, I plan to do more urban sketching. I have become an ADMIN for the Urban Sketchers London Ontario (link to facebook group). So my plans and goals for this year include:
  • sketch more regular, three or four time per month
  • post sketches on my website (https://www.radfordart.ca/urban-sketching.html) and social channels
  • add more people to sketches, after all, urban really is about people
  • add sign posts, traffic signals, and street signs to give more context to sketches
  • add the watercolour on location, currently, I add colour at home later when I get home and in the past I have been working in black and white
  • once again, participate in the March ONEweek100people challenge

New Years Goals - No. 1

Put more effort into selling more art. I love the creation part, but I am not putting enough effort into selling. This was on my list last year and I worked on it to a point. I have kept good relations with the shops that already sell my work. And here is some of the shows and sales from last year.
  • MINIATURE SHOW, St. Thomas Elgin Public Art Center, St. Thomas ON
  • Square Foot Show, Westland Gallery, London ON
  • MINIATURE SHOW, Art with Panache, London, ON
  • in view of THE ARTIST Exhibition, St. Thomas-Elgin Public Art Centre, St. Thomas
  • from pose to page: a life drawing exhibition, TAP Centre for Creativity, London, ON
Setting up an Etsy shop was also on my list last year, but I never did that.  So, that is number one on my list. My deadline is to be up and running by February 1st. It's a lot of work, with many challenges....
  • big learning curve, lots of research
  • deciding what to list and what to not list in the shop
  • getting good photo references
  • creating writeups
  • sorting out shipping
  • pricing - is always a challenge
  • deciding and purchasing whatever supplies I might need
  • then getting the word out there
  • organizing my inventory and supplies in my studio... which has lead to organizing my studio better!
Today, I am off to the post office to get prices and then to buy a few supplies. then maybe get a coffee and do some urban sketching, which is also on my list...
